Astronomy & Physics Complete with Planetarium

The museum contains a wide range of scientific and technological exhibits from ancient times to the present day, including the Renaissance.

old globe The historical emphasis concentrates on the astronomical instruments invented by Eberhard Baldewein and Jost Bürgi which provided the equipment for Europe’s first observatory. Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse-Kassel had them installed on the terrace of Kassel’s castle in 1560. Also included are valuable objects relating to physics, microscopes, optics and scales such as telescopes and watches to measure time and space. Other early examples show the development of energy technology (Magdeburg hemispheres, Denis Papin’s steam pump) as well as data processing from ancient times to the first computer invented by Konrad Zuse.
